Hi all,
Well, I did a lengthy post about my new computer, and got kicked out of the site, so this will be briefer. Mom decided to give it to me early, because we wanted to get any problems out of the way. We had trouble getting me back on the internet, because it only had 1 jack where there should've been 2. The other jack was for ethernet, and we don't have broad band. The modem wouldn't detect a dial tone, and a man at a computer place told her we'd need a splitter. It's working now, and I'm back online. I have an hp pavilian running xp home. Haven't been rooting around enough to see what hardware I got, but it has a lot of software on it. Windows xp is rather a challenge. Wishme
luck. wonderwoman

Just set things to look like the old Windows versions, and you'll be ok. It'll work like old 9X, but faster, better, and happier!

Hi hope,
That's great. Well, mine is doing well, but after moving around in device manager, it turns out I don't have as much ram as we thought. It says 512 on the box, but in device manager it says 384. Norton comes up every time I start my computer, and I'm like a fish out of water with it. I let it scan my hard drive, then took a look at microsoft word, and jaws and the computer started responding slowly, but a restart brought everything back to normal. I have something called hp organize, which comes up when the computer does, and hp updates that come up trying to get me to update with them, but it doesn't stay on the screen. That could've been what made the computer slow down. Aside from that, it's doing fine. I've already listened to the tour on the vip site, and a little bit of acb radio with windows media player 10. I'm not sure yet, but it looks like windows media player might play mp3 files. if so, I could listen to my otr cds without reinstalling winamp. Anyway, it has a 1.118 gigahertz processor, 80 gb hard drive, and a cd/cdrw and dvd combo. It also has a little door that doesn't look like anything would go there, and my mom and I can't figure out what it is.It has realtek audio, with legacy drivers. The speakers are built right inside the monitor.

Thats good, bet it makes a change from the 200 mhz?
Windows media player can play mp3s, and i think that the door might be a thing that sighted people like so that they can see into the case, or it might be for putting another drive into it.
Also, i think that you do have 512 meg of ram, its just that because of the sort of graphics card that you have, it takes some of your ram to act as video memory.
For example this laptop that i am on has 768 meg of ram, but my onboard graphics takes 64 meg of ram, so 704 meg is useable for windows; all onboard graphics card take ram, some that arn't onboard have there own memory.

hi Ben, well I hope I do. Anyway, I haven't had anymore slow downs since my last post. I turned off hp updates, and I hope that will keep hp organizer from coming up. Yes, 1.118 g hertz is a change from 200 megahertz, and I like that I'm connecting at a faster speed, not as fast today as it was yesterday, 45.2 kbps, instead of 50.6 k, but it's better than 28.8, or 26.4 k. and I'm enjoying having a multichannel sound card. There is a multichannel manager under programs, but I haven't entered on it, because I don't know what it is. I'm still scared of Norton. It always wants to do the live updates at a bad time, like when I'm not connected to the internet, or doing something. I'm glad I have that hp updates thing turned off. I think that might've been the cause of my slow down, and it would come up right when I was in the shut down process. How many in here get errors with adobe acrobat reader? I was reading one of the pc manuals, and all of a sudden, some dialogue comes up and says something about the memory not being able to read it.
